Jason Van Proyen #35399

PDGA #35399

Long time GRIPPT Team member. He caught the eye of GRIPPT when he jumped from Rec. Division up to a average AM. To this day he is still a Zero Time World Champion. Don’t let that fool you, the dude is solid to golf with and you are guaranteed to have a good time golfing with him. Check out his in the bag from the 2013 Windy City River open at the Motel 6

How did you get into Disc Golf and when?

It was sometime in 2005 I believe. Fellow GRIPPT team member Josh Bohling called and asked if I wanted to play this game where you throw discs into baskets and scores like golf.

Why did you get competitive and when did that trigger?

It must have been in 2007, me and Josh we’re playing at twin rivers park. When a disc almost hit me on a 400+ ft hole. Looked back to yell at the dude and to my amazement he was on the tee. At that time I was lucky to get the disc to go further in a straight line distance than straight up in the air. And that’s when I meet GRIPPT team member Nick Sanchez. Shortly after meeting him Josh, Nick, and I went to play a round at stilly and the course was closed for a tournament. I remember thinking this looks fun. I ended up getting my pdga membership in 2008 and have been playing competitively since.

Most memorable tournament to date?

I’d have to say 2010 am worlds. It started off so bad. I was nervous and in my own head and it showed the first round. So after day 1 I was like damn near last card. Then I start off day 2 by waking up late and not being able to find the course. I missed the start and carded a 7 to start that round. At that point I was ready to fly home but I was lucky GRIPPT team member Chris Fabry was there to talk me out of it. I finished the tournament with some of the highest rated rounds I had shot up to that point and barely made the cash. Which I was really happy with after the way the trip started. A quick shout-out to #2 on my list the 2011 Windy River Open. Qtang, Ray Shoemaker, my little bro, Jesse Ingram and me made the tri-cities trip. We ended up at Applebee’s with a dude bartender hitting on us giving up free Jell-O shots. Had ourselves a few pitchers of Irish death and took our mini’s and made up Kennewick’s 18 hole urban mini golf. Great times

Most memorable non-tournament round to date?

I’d have to say going to Hawaii where Josh was stationed and having him and his club set up a course just for us to play. It was easily the most picturesque round of golf I’d ever played.

What part of your game do you feel best about?

Probably my ability to get off the tee with my backhand. I have pretty good distance and normally am good at hitting my lines. If I’m off then well it’s probably gonna be a long day.

Least favorite part of your game?

Seriously, putting next question. Note this is when the TEAM Captain says “You average AM”

Dream Sponsor?

Innova

Okay dream round, who are the other 3 players on your card and what course?

I don’t think I could pick just three because #1 would be Peter Land, and I’m sure there would be 1000 others trying to get on that card also. As for the course SeaTac.

Advice to new players?

No matter what happened your last hole, last shot. Good or bad forget it, move on and give 100% focus to the throw that is right in front of you. It was advice given to me by a friend early in my competitive career. It’s still something I could improve on.

Advice to people better then you?

Have a bad round every once in awhile dude. I miss you we haven’t thrown with each other for awhile. Play down to my card lmao.
